An Approach to Implement Prognostics and Health Management in the Aerospace Industry
Earlier failures were analysed after the fault/failure had already occurred. In recent years, due to technological advancements in the fields of data modelling, simulation, data analytics and others, the data received from the product in conjunction with product life cycle data, can be fed to simulation and various diagnostics and prognostics algorithms are thus a possibility.
Test scenarios based on data received, can help to identify deviation from normal pattern. This can be used in providing further insight into failures, by implementing Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) framework. In an industry like commercial aviation, where the sheer number of parts that make up an airplane are huge, it becomes necessary to have a definite framework which can help to predict the failures and anomalous product behaviour, and warning or maintenance alerts.
