AI-Assisted Digitization and Verification of 2D Engineering Drawings
Converting paper-based engineering drawings into CAD model files is a tedious process and is currently done manually. Automating the conversion process of such drawings therefore, represents a significant potential for time and labor savings. The tool developed should have a method to take a 2D Engineering drawing image and segregate the drawing and the non-drawing entities or components from the image, and then generate output in a digitized format to be imported in a CAD tool. Once the drawing is digitized to a certain extent, a verification tool can help in verifying components which could not be digitized or missed out during digitization and later can be manually/corrected by the Domain expert.
This paper outlines the development of a tool which digitalizes 2- dimensional Engineering Drawings using image processing and machine learning modules. Using an AI-assistive tool can be particularly useful here, especially in driving a significant reduction in the overall effort and improvement in overall accuracy.
