Because of the growing need for energy efficiency, the market for regulating utility power is booming. Controlling power in the thousands of kW range necessitates a different approach. Consumers of power rely on relatively constant voltage to ensure that their equipment operates properly. A tap changer regulates a transformer's output voltage by altering the number of turns in one winding and thereby regulating the transformer's turns ratio. This system is built to comply with IEC 60214 criteria and the IEEE C57.131-1995 standard for load tap changers.
