The Frost Sensor is an equipment and technique for measuring the accumulation of insulating accumulations of materials (e.g., ice or dirt) on a refrigeration system's evaporative heat exchanger. Frost buildup affects refrigeration system performance because it serves as a thermal insulator of the cooling coil and inhibits airflow over the coil's cooling fins. The frost sensor designed by LTTS detects frost formed on the evaporator coil and triggers defrost on a need basis, which increases the energy efficiency of the refrigeration system.
